The Best Way to Clean Impact Windows
If you live in a storm-prone region, you probably know just how important impact windows are to your safety.
Impact windows aren't like traditional windows, as they’re manufactured differently and made to withstand projectiles and high-velocity winds. As you’d expect, the cleaning works differently from that of regular windows.
Cleaning your impact windows the correct way is essential to preserve their integrity and ensure that you get maximum value from your investment.
How to clean impact windows
While there are several commercial-grade products to get the job done, you can still get good results with a homemade solution made of one part vinegar and two parts water.
Cleaning the insides of your impact windows
To do this:
Prepare your cleaning mixture
Mix some liquid dish soap with cool water in a bucket, and place a big cloth underneath the window to catch spills.
Wipe the right way
Wipe the window with a soft cloth or sponge, and ensure you clean the frames, too. Then, spray the windows with your water vinegar solution.
Wipe thoroughly with a clean cloth using Z motions until all the dirty streaks are gone. Finally, allow it to dry naturally.
Cleaning your impact windows from the outside
This is where the real work lies.
Initial cleaning
Rinse off the surface dirt with a hose, then follow the same cleaning process as with the inside windows. Then, rinse it off with the hose and then apply the cleaning solution.
Use the cleaning solution
Use a top-to-bottom cleaning motion using a clean, rubber-blade squeegee. For tough stains, saturate with the vinegar solution and soak for a while before drying.
Finally, rinse the screens with plain water and repeat the cleaning exercise as many times as required to get the best result.
What to avoid when cleaning impact windows
While cleaning your hurricane windows, here are some things to avoid:
Don’t use paper towels, as they can’t eliminate all the moisture on the glass. Plus, they can leave the windows susceptible to damage in the long term
Use soft cloth or microfiber towels for wiping
Your cleaners must be non-abrasive
Avoid high-pressure hoses to prevent caulking around the windows
Carry out the cleaning out of the reach of direct sunlight, as this helps prevent the water from drying too quickly and creating water spots
Avoid using metal scrapers on the windows
